Why is the false ceiling becoming popular ?

 False ceiling is continuously getting a popularity these days. Installing a false ceiling was the part of offices, hotel, auditoriums, meeting halls and other public gathering places before. But in recent years it has become popular in residential building and also a symbol of modernity.

False ceiling is the ceiling which is established below the traditional one. It is hung below the traditional ceiling. It is the part of finishing not the part of construction. It is the matter of appearance not of strength.

False ceiling may be of various types - Gypsum false ceiling, plaster of parish false ceiling and wood ceiling etc. Among these types, gypsum board ceiling is more common.



But why is the false ceiling becoming popular ?

False ceilings are becoming popular due their efficacy, which they carry. 

  • Installing a false ceiling is an easy task with suitable tools.
  • It hides the wiring components and gives a clear look to the ceiling.
  • In case of ceiling, it is easy to dismantle and resemble their parts like panels.
  • When we install the false ceiling, a layer of air is formed between false ceiling and traditional one which possess sound and thermal insulation property. It disconnects the indoor environment to outdoor environments and hence the room remains cool in summer and warm in winter. Similarly it prevents the outside noise from entering in the room. They are also a good sound absorber and make the room quiet. Thus, it plays crucial role in acoustics and maintaining room temperature and ultimately reduces the electric bills.
  • In  renewal of an existing structure/building, it is quite economical to install false ceiling as it gives great appearance and makes a totally difference indoor environment.


 Although false ceiling has many advantages, it also carry some negative points. It reduces the height of ceiling up to minimum 5 to 8 inches to encase lighting system, fans fixtures etc. It does not have long life and requires regular maintenance. Sagging may also take place in false ceiling which will interfere in appearance. It is not much stable, in the case high vibration like earthquake it may easily turn out to be unstable. Care should be taken while installing, if it is not fixed in proper way, a sudden fall of false ceiling or their fixtures may take place.

  Lug angle - Lug angle is an angle section of short length which connects the outstanding legs of angle section or member to the gusset plate.  It reduces the length of connection to the gusset plate and also reduces the shear lag effect.   When the lug angle is used, the unconnected length of main angle acts like a connected leg and hence entire cross-section area start resisting the tension. Difference between butt joint and lap joint

  LAP JOINT - In this joint, two members are overlapped and connected together. The load in lap joint has eccentricity because centre of gravity of load in both members are not in same line. Thus, a couple is formed which causes undesirable bending in the connection and the rivets may fail in tension.
