 There are numerous large irrigation projects have been established in for the agricultural development of India. In this article, we will mention the some important irrigation projects with their location and the service they provide.


1. Nagarjunasagar project (Andhra Pradesh)

  • Location - across the river Krishna in Nalgonda district.
  • Type - composite earth and masonry dam.
  • Size - 4865 m long and 125 m high.
  • Benefit - irrigates 8.3 lakh ha.
2. Godavari barrage (Andhra Pradesh)
  • Location - across the river Godavari in East Godavari district.
  • Type - barrage.
  • Size - 3600 m long with 175 bays
  • Benefit - irrigates 5.2 lakh ha.
3. Gandak project (Bihar)
  • Location - across the river Gandak at Valmikinagar in Champaran district.
  • Type - barrage, multipurpose scheme.
  • Size - 740 m long.
  • Benefit - irrigates 15.07 lakh ha in India and Nepal, 15,000 kW Power house as a gift to Nepal.
4. Ukai project (Gujarat)
  • Location - across river Tapti in Surat district.
  • Type - composite earth and masonry dam, multipurpose scheme.
  • Size - 4928 m long and 68.6 m high.
  • Benefits - irrigates 1.58 lakh ha and generates 300 MW power.
5. Tungabhadra project (Karnataka)
  • Location - across river Tungabhadra in Bellary district.
  • Type - masonry dam, multipurpose scheme.
  • Size - 2440 m long and 49.39 m high.
  • Benefits - irrigates 3.3 lakh ha in Andhra and Karnataka states. installed power capacity 99 MW.
6. Narmada sagar project (Madhya Pradesh)
  • Location - across the river Narmada in Khandwa district.
  • Type - a multipurposes inter-state  project of M.P. , Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. It is a concrete dam.
  • Size - 94.4 m high and 640 m long.
  • Benefit - irrigates 1.69 lakh ha in M.P.. generates 1000 MW hydro power, supplies water to Sardar Sarover project of Gujarat.
7. Hirakud project (Orissa)
  • Location - across river Mahanadi near Sambalpur.
  • Type - composite dam, multipurpose scheme.
  • Size - 4801 m long and 61 m high.
  • Benefits - irrigates 2.54 lakh ha, generates 270 MW power, flood protection for d/s area.
8. Bhakra Nangal project (Punjab)
  • Location - across the river Sutlej in Bilaspur district.
  • Type - a straight gravity dam and a barrage of 13 km in d/s, multipurpose scheme.
  • Size - 518 m long and 226 m high dam and 305 m long and 29 m high barrage.
  • Benefit - irrigates 14.6 lakh ha in Punjab, Haryana and Punjab, installed power capacity of 1204 MW.
9. Tehri dam Project (Uttarakhand)
  • Location - across the river Bhagirathi in Tehri district.
  • Type - multipurpose dam.
  • Size - 260.5 m high dam.
  • Benefits - irrigates 6.67 lakh ha through existing lower and upper Ganga canal systems after remodelling, installed capacity of power house 600 MW.
10. Kosi project (Bihar)
  • Location - across the river Kosi near Hanuman Nagar on Indo-Nepal border.
  • Type - Barrage, multipurpose scheme.
  • Size - 1144 m long
  • Benefits - irrigates 4.34 lakh ha, 20 MW hydro power potential, 120 km long flood protection embankments.
